About this Retreat

The need for emotional intelligence in our response to the climate crisis is now more than urgent. As the crisis deepens, governments are declaring climate emergencies, schools are striking, and the call to action has never been louder. Many people are confused and afraid.

The purpose of this workshop/retreat is to learn and refine the core skills of Ekodo – the name that Sean, Jo and Arthur have given to the training they have developed in “the art of compassionate eco-political engagement.” Their training involves a combination of interactive workshops, meditation, talks, discussion, campaign planning, and networking.

Unskillful, divisive approaches to climate action lead to political own-goals, burnout, cynicism and ineffectiveness. The climate crisis cannot afford this. The skills of Ekodo are about undoing division, resolving conflict, inspiring collaboration, raising funds at scale, and nurturing our own energy and aliveness in our life-long effort to heal the world.

Above all, Ekodo is the practice of kindness. Like learning to make music, kindness as an eco-political method is a skill that benefits from practice, perseverance, and technique. Skillful application of ancient wisdom nourishes in all directions and enables us to endure whilst turning our activism into sacred practice. In this way we heal the world, ourselves and our communities simultaneously.

This retreat/workshop will be Climate Positive with Ekos - offsetting 20% more than it emits and contributing to Drawdown. This will cover participant travel, food, and venue.

What To Bring

Bedding (sheets and duvet) is provided at the Shambhala venue - although feel free to bring a sleeping bag as a backup. Please bring toiletries/towel, warm clothes and walking shoes for outdoor walks, torch, personal meditation cushion or stool if you prefer your own (cushions will be provided). If you are bringing a child or children under 12 (i.e. non-participants in need of child care to enable parent participation), please get in touch so we can make detailed arrangements.
Food

Food will be vegetarian with vegan options. If you have special dietary requirements you can inform us when you complete the registration form.
Transport

Ekodo retreat participants typically come from different parts of the country, some locals, some from Nelson, others from further afield. If you require transport help (e.g. car pooling, or a lift from Nelson or Golden Bay airport) you will have an opportunity to inform us in the registration form.

There is a flight from Wellington direct to Golden Bay on Golden Bay Airlines departing at 9:30am on Thursday 23rd April, returning at 2:30pm on Monday 27th of April. Flights from various locations to Nelson are also an option.
